FEATURE ARTICLE

You Could Get Gourd!
at Wuertz Farm’s 3rd Annual Gourd Festival

There is one big difference between the infamous “Running of the Bulls” held every year in Pamplona, Spain, and the nationally acclaimed “Running of the Gourds” festival at the Pinal County Fairgrounds – Casa Grande, AZ. At the first festivity, folks don’t want to get gored. At the second one, they do! Get gourds, that is.

These hard-shelled cousins of the squash family grow in so many different shapes and sizes that they are fast becoming the most sought after medium for seasoned and aspiring artist, crafters, carvers, and musicians. People are discovering their limitless potential for creative expression and profitability and are excited about this upcoming finely orchestrated gathering of gourd enthusiasts.
This year’s festival is a three-day event that features over one hundred artists; thirty-nine reserved classes with over 200 students; numerous commercial vendors selling books, tools, dyes and supplies, and a huge selection of freshly harvested Wuertz Farm gourds.

A favorite Saturday attraction is the “Grande 5500” mini Gourdster Race, where competitors run gourd-crafted pinewood derby cars down a 30-foot incline and across an electronic finish line. Sunday hosts a costume parade of participants wearing exotic gourd masks. Both events award cash prizes. A life-size gourd bull will also be on display for mounted photo ops.

In addition to gourd activities, several hot musical groups will perform throughout the festival. Los Primos, a foursome of Latin singers from New Mexico; Timeless Melodies, a trio specializing in the Oldies, and Michael Heralda, a well-known Aztec storyteller who engages audience participation during his captivating presentation of history, mythology and gourd instrument music. Last but not least, a fine selection of food vendors and Sundance Farm’s large variety of fresh grown produce assures will leave hungry or empty-handed.
