FEATURE ARTICLE

Here Comes Peter Cottontail...
Easter's on its Way!

Do you have all of the gourds you need to make this Easter special and full of handcrafted adornments? If not, here are some ideas to inspire your creativity!

Use waterbased paint and/or leather dyes on egg gourds to make lasting egg treasures that the kids are able to hunt for year after year, while avoiding the potential "rotten" eggs from those that get missed. Create a quick "wax resist" look by writing cute messages and designs with a white crayon before applying the leather dye. Place in 200 degree F oven for a few minutes until crayon is melted. Wipe with paper towel and dip again in lighter dye to fill in pattern where the crayon was. To finish off your decorative eggs, coat your designs with a matte acrylic spray to protect your color and keep the dye on the eggs and not on the precious hands that find them. For a more shiny look, use the gloss version of the spray.

For Ukranian-style Easter Gourds

Egg Gourds - cleaned on the outside
Writing tools - straight pins stuck into a dowel, cork, or pencil eraser
Wax - equal amounts beeswax and paraffin
Wax warmer or candle heated container
Leather dyes
Paper tissues or soft absorbent cloth

Step 1 - Melt the wax. Working quickly to prevent the wax from hardening, dip the pinhead into melted wax and touch it to the gourd to create your design. When the pinhead is gently touched to the gourd, it will form a small dot. To make a tear drop shape, drag the pinhead along the surface of the gourd. You can create a variety of designs using these two shapes.

Step 2 - One to three colors are usually used for each gourd. Always progress from the lightest to the darkest dye color. When the complete wax design has been applied, color the gourd with your first dye color. The more dye applied, the darker it will be. Let the gourd dry, add additional wax designs and repeat color process with darker dye.

Step 3 - To finish, after the final dye has been applied, remove the wax by holding the gourd, a small section at a time, near the side of the candle flame for no more than five seconds. As soon as the section appears wet, blot with a clean, soft cloth. Continue until all the wax is removed. Do not hold the gourd over the tip of flame, as carbon will collect and darken your design, and you could burn your gourd. Use caution!

Step 4 - Gourds and their color may be preserved with acrylic sealers. Use a matte or gloss type of sealer and apply 2 or 3 light coats.
