GOURD TIP: When you are making a drum and putting holes in the skin stretched on top a lot of people try punching the holes with a leather punch (which many times proves to be difficult). I found it's much faster and easier to use the small tip of my burning tool and it works great (but smells awful). And another gourd tip: Just wanted to add another tip for punching holes in the hide for a drum. Just finished making an ocean drum and I used a Phillips screw driver with a short handle for better control. The short handle gives me better control while hitting it through the hide with a hammer. This works fine for me and no bad smell. By Jewell Nagel.

The Inner Beauty Decoupage
the Inside of Your Gourd

by Doris Trombley

1. Wash and bleach the inside and outside of your gourd, rinse thoroughly. If you do not bleach the inside, mold will migrate to outside later on when you decoupage, paint or stain, then it's too late to fix it.

2. Sand inside for a smooth surface if you want too, rough surface is ok.

3. You need to base paint the inside of your gourd to a matching color or a dove gray (light), to match what ever product you will be using for the inside. If not, the natural color of the gourd will wash out the color of your product, such as, fabric, tissue paper, paper napkins or dried flowers. Let dry over night. The inside of the gourd is so porous that the paint or stain is sucked up and will need time to dry completely.

4. If you want to decoupage with fabric, wash it first to remove all sizing that is in new fabric. If using used fabric, wash to remove any softener.

5. Paper products can be cut or torn into workable pieces. To obtain a certain picture or design, take a small brush with water and circle the picture. It will then tear only where wet. Paper napkins have two or three layers to them and need to be pulled apart. These too can be cut or torn into workable pieces. Normally this will be about 2"X2" or 3"x3".

6. Use Mod Podge or white school glue diluted about 1/3 to 1/2 with water. This will give you enough glue to stick your product. This is going to make a wet surface, but is not so tacky and sticky and is workable longer. Later you will be sealing this.

7. I always start in the middle and work my way out to the edges. You may want to overlap your pieces or let the paint or stain show for another layer of depth. You can cover your edges and overlap to the outside of your gourd if you want, but the outside needs to be finished and have a light coating of sealer first or the wetness of the glue could ruin your piece.

8. Once you are finished gluing, you need to set your gourd aside and let it dry for a day or two. You do not want to apply a sealer with dampness still inside, mold could grow again. Let your sealer dry for 1 or 2 hours before adding another coat, add coats until you get your desired effect.

9. Your finished gourd will now have a very hard and durable inside.

10. If you want to decoupage the outside of your gourd, I would sand with a 150 grit sandpaper to rough it up so the paint and glue will have a better sticking surface, then follow the directions same as for the inside.

11. Mod Podge will seal shoe wax; apply shoe wax, buff to shine, and seal with Mod Podge.

12. Enjoy your work of art.
