With an overstock of gourd rings, the Gourd Drum Kits are priced to sell! And that means terrific savings for you! Create your own beautiful Gourd Drum and master the rhythms of your own beat! Order your Drum Kit today! GOURD TIP: When you are making a drum and putting holes in the skin stretched on top a lot of people try punching the holes with a leather punch (which many times proves to be difficult). I found it's much faster and easier to use the small tip of my burning tool and it works great (but smells awful). And another gourd tip: Just wanted to add another tip for punching holes in the hide for a drum. Just finished making an ocean drum and I used a Phillips screw driver with a short handle for better control. The short handle gives me better control while hitting it through the hide with a hammer. This works fine for me and no bad smell. By Jewell Nagel.

FEATURE ARTICLE

Patriotic Container

Design by Melynda Lotven (Copyrighted)

Supplies
For this project you will need:
A canteen or turban gourd
Apple Barrel acrylic paints:
- Barn red
- White
- Golden brown
- Black
- True navy
Delta Ceramcoat Exterior/Interior Varnish
Paint brushes:
- 1” flat blush
- ½” flat brush
- small detail brush to sign your name on the bottom
Tools:
- Hand jig saw
- Scraper
- Sandpaper

Step 1:Take a clean gourd and draw with a pencil where you will be cutting along with notches for the star (use a small Philips screw driver or a nail to pierce the gourd and cut with the hand jigsaw).

Step 2: Clean the gourd out using the scraper then sand paper. Lightly sand around the cut area.

Step3: Base coat the whole gourd white inside then outside, let dry. If one coat does not completely cover the gourd color apply one more coat of white and let dry.

Step 4: Measure around the gourd with a measuring tape. You will need to make the stripes an even width and have 12 stripes, depending on the size of your gourd and personal preference. Mark off 12 even stripes. Draw stars on the top or lid of the gourd.

Step 5: Using the flat ½” brush load it with golden brown and white and paint the side of each of the white stripes. Use the ¼” brush and load it with golden brown and white and paint around the stars.

Step 6: Paint the stripes (in between the golden brown areas ) red, let dry. Paint blue around the stars on the top. Let dry. Repaint if you need 2 coats.

Step 7: Load your brush with red and black and paint on the sides of the red stripes.
Straighten out anything you feel you need to with the detail brush.

Step 8: Paint the inside of the gourd bowl and lid, with either blue or red. Finish up by signing and dating the bottom and sealing with an acrylic water base varnish.

*Note - The lid does not open straight up due to the angle of the stars, the lid will slide into place.

GALLERY UPDATE

Want to know what's happening at Jasmin Galleries? Then this is the section for you! Get the latest scoop on upcoming events right here!

Just in case you missed the last update, we are reprinting it. If you did happen to read it last time, please skip to the paragraph in bold. Thank you for all of your support!

Currently, the gallery is FULL of beautiful works of gourd art! And as the tourist season is starting up, and the marketing effort is being kicked into high gear, we are readily anticipating a busy, successful summer!

As many of you know, there is a bit of an education process that needs to occur with the creation and selling of gourd art to the public. And having said this, we are asking for any and all support you can give to spread the word to the buying public that Jasmin Galleries is a gallery like none other. It is an exclusively gourd art gallery! The more people who know about the gallery and purchase artwork from it, the better off we all will be! By spreading the word about gourd art to the public, we will be able to bring the much due respect that this wonderfully, versatile art medium deserves!

Jasmin Galleries is searching for Volunteer Demo Artists! Support the Gallery and yourself by spending a few hours working on your gourd art at the Gallery! Work on gourds, talk to people, and potentially sell some of your gourd art! Contact Patti for more details at 951.325.7602 or via email at patti@jasmingalleries.com.

And while we have every bit of faith that the La Jolla location will be a huge success, we are also currently searching out our second storefront location in Laguna Beach, California! Our goal is to have it open before the end of summer 2005! So, for those of you that have not yet had a chance to get your gourd art into the Galleries, there are more opportunities coming soon!

Now, with the start-up of any business venture, there can be challenges. Jasmin Galleries has already experienced a computer virus and the main computer that held all the emails has crashed. It was a technical oversight that allowed the virus to enter, and the computer is already rebuilt. For those of you who have kindly emailed your gourd art submissions, we sincerely apologize for the delayed response. If you haven't heard from us, please resubmit your artwork and/or request for info to Norine at norine@jasmingalleries.com.

And as Editor of The Gourdzette, co-operator of California Gourds, co-owner of Jasmin Galleries, and mother of three little ones, I would like to thank all of you for your patience for the revealing of the Jasmin Galleries website! It is going as scheduled, and I will have it completed and ready for viewing soon!
