FEATURE ARTICLE

Gourd Glamour Girl
by Debra Maerz

Usually when I come across a broken gourd I cut it up and use the small pieces for jewelry. But for some reason this broken gourd was “telling” me what she wanted to become – a glamorous art doll gourd!

So I began by sketching with a pencil the placement of the face and neck.

I then used an awl to make holes for stands of hair.

Then I sealed the entire gourd with gesso. I painted the face and neck with a flesh color acrylic paint. Because this gourd did not have a bottom to it I had to create “legs” – and I did that by cutting a round piece of foam board to fit snuggly up inside the gourd. Two wood dowels were inserted and glued into the foam board. I painted the facial features of the gourd with acrylic paints. The armature for the arms is made with pipe cleaners. The clothing on the gourd itself was painted to match the fabric I used for the sleeves and pants. The arms and legs were stuffed with fiberfill. I cut out the little flowers on the fabric and glued them to the vest part of the gourd. I added a bead trim to the inside of the gourd. The hands were made from polymer clay. The purse and hat were made from felt. The hair was added last and made by separating strands of 3 ply yarn, washing in very hot water and then drying the strands. Several strands were inserted into the holes with a little glue. The boots were made from muslin so that the dowel would fit into the heel of the boot. The boots were stuffed with fiber fill, sewn to the pants and painted with black acrylic paint. The gourd was attached with glue to a wooden base that was painted black. The bead and crystal embellishments were attached with glue. The shopping bag was made from an American Eagle Outfitters shopping bag.

NOTE: I didn't include specifics of paint colors because that would depend on
the choice of fabric colors.
